To you who gaze, a lamp I am
To you who know, a mirror.
To you who knock, a door I am
To you who fare, the way.
Interestingly, Jesus didn't say "I am the precious object that you gaze upon" or "I am the destination you come to at the end of the road." Jesus is offering himself as a Way, a way to see, to know, to come to something even greater. He is a doorway through which we step into Oneness with the divine. He shines a light that lets us really see beyond appearances to the true reality of God around and within us.
To me the most puzzling line has always been where he says that to those who "know" he is a mirror. I think that when we know the truth but we don't realize it, the teacher can hold a mirror up to us and show us that we know. As Starhawk says it in the "Charge of the Goddess":
If that which you seek you find not within yourself, you will never find it without. For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.Anahata's CD The Gods Have Meant that I Should Dance and many other offerings are available on her website.
